Are you a student or are you working? What’s your job?

I'm working right now. I quit being a student several years ago. I’ve been working for a construction consultant company consultancy for the last 3 years, as a civil engineer.

What’s the main difficulty in your job?

It’s a bit complicated. My major responsibility is to build up virtual models by way of computer programming. And these computer simulations are to simulate the mechanical behavior of buildings under real construction. But sometimes when things don’t follow my prediction and go wrong I will fell feel frustrated.

Will you continue to work in your field? Why?

Yap, I firmly believe the answer is yes. Despite the frustration I mentioned, I can get a sense of achievement through my job. When I finish a design or the layouts of the a building, and especially when the construction is done. this sentence is not a sentence – just a clause I can visually see a 3-dimention building jumping up from my 2-dimention design. It’s great, really.

What’s your favorite type of TV program?

Because I love my job very much, there are many documentaries on TV relating to architecture. This has a logic problem. They always introduce some new approaches to construct construction and the latest materials which can be used. I used to read architecture magazines to gain the information I need, but now there are numerous TV programs which link to are about architecture, such as those shown on the Discovery channel and the National Geographic channel. These TV shows are more interesting and dynamic than books.

Why do people need to watch English TV programs?

I suppose there are two purposes reasons. First of all, they are good for people who are learning English. Take me as an example, now I want to learn English well, so I force myself to watch these English programs instead of Chinese TV shows. It’s beneficial, you know. When you watch these shows, it they always has have Chinese subtitles underneath. So as to I can compare my hearing listening with my vision reading at the same time. Second, they are for people who want to gain international news. There are just a few local news channels that will report international news. Accordingly, if you want to know what happened in the world, you need to turn to an English news channel. Of course, for most foreigners, the reason is distinctive- clear—its hard for them they are hard to comprehend Chinese.
