Show Your Range: Subordinating Conjunctions

A subordinating conjunction is a word which joins a subordinate (independent) clause to a main (independent) clause.

Use them to express contrast between ideas; to show a cause/effect relationship between ideas; to state a condition . . . and so on

They are very useful in the IELTS speaking module to expand your range. Get into the habit of using them and remember to use them frequently in the exam.

After
We are going out to eat after we finish taking the test.
Jill came tumbling, after Jack had fallen.
After meeting him, I felt a lot better.

Since
Since we live in Taipei, we've gone to every fireworks display.
I took the bus, since it would have taken too long to walk

While
While I was waiting for class, I ate my lunch.
You can learn a lot while you're over there: You won't regret it!

Although
Although the wait was over two hours, the exhibition was well worth it
The trip was a disaster, although we did get to take a few good photos.

Even if
Even if you've already bought your ticket, you'll still need to wait in line.

Because
I love living in Taipei because life here is so much fun.

after; although; as; as if; as long as; as though;

as much as; as soon as; because; before; even if

even though; how; if; if only; in order that; inasmuch;

lest; now that; once; provided (that); rather than;

since; so that; than; that; though; till; unless; until;

when; whenever; where; wherever; while

So try to get into the habit of separating clauses with these conjunctions. Of course don't overdo it, or you will sound strange! But it's a great way to . . . show your range.
