Curiosity about Culture

You have to be interested in other cultures. If you are, everything else will be better. Research has shown this.

You'll understand the language more deeply.

You'll want to study harder, because it'll be more interesting.

You'll learn more quickly.

And you'll reach all of your goals.

Of course it has to be an English speaking culture, but it doesn't have to be America or England.

So now you have to think about how to develop that interest.

Follow a sport from your chosen country, or follow the business news!

Try the food, listen to the music, look at the history.

Make a friend.

Plan a trip and actually go there, or if you can't at least read a few travel articles or books.

And the great thing is: it's a cycle. The more you know about the culture the more language you'll pick up; and the better your language skills, the more you'll find out about the culture.
