Show Your Range: Subjunctive Mood 2

The subjunctive is also found in clauses following a verb that expresses a doubt, a wish, regret, request, demand, or proposal.

These are verbs typically followed by clauses that take the subjunctive:

ask, demand, determine, insist, move, order, pray, prefer, recommend, regret, request, require, suggest, and wish

Some example sentences:

  • He asked that the accountant check again
  • Their main demand was that the lawsuit be dropped.
  • They insist that the principal resign!
  • I wish he were able to run faster
  • His requirement is that everyone be here on time.
  • He recommended that each salesman report his expenses
  • She suggested that we be more aggressive in our campaign.

But I guess that these kinds of sentences are not so easy to get into the test. So concentrate on one or two. Using wish should be pretty easy for you:

  • I wish I could eat it every day.
  • I wish I had more time to devote to it.
  • I wish he weren't like that, but there is nothing I can do about it.

This could be useful in your conclusions of a Part 2 answer, when you are summing up. So, it's a good idea to use the subjunctive mood a few times . . . to show your range!
